The Family Medicine Residency Program at LSUHSC-Monroe/E. A. Conway Medical Center, an affiliate of LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, is the only residency program fully based at Conway. The program has been developed to train resident physicians to deliver competent and comprehensive family medical care. Residents work primarily with indigent patients and their families in the inpatient setting as well as the outpatient hospital clinics. Residents also follow a panel of patients in a local nursing home. The program has been designed with a "hands-on" approach to education . Drawing patients from a large "medically underserved" patient population, the residents have the opportunity to function on the wards, in the ICU, and in the ER providing care to their patients free from competition with residents in other primary care specialties. This allows ample opportunity to become proficient at a wide variety of procedures. Through close working relationships with full-time faculty physicians based at E. A. Conway, by conferences and teaching rounds, modern inpatient and outpatient facilities the resident will develop professional capabilities to a sophisticated level while learning to assume a compassionate concern for the patient and his family setting. The faculty are committed to the concepts and teaching of Family Medicine.
