Screening Procedures
An age and gender specific algorithm has been developed for the screening procedures used
in the program. In general, the algorithm is congruent with accepted guidelines from the American Cancer Society, the
National Cancer Institute, and other professional organizations. Participants are offered a clinical breast examination
and a mammogram (and advised to do Breast Self-Examination monthly); a Pap-smear and a pelvic examination; a PSA and a
Digital Rectal Examination; and Fecal Occult Blood Test.
Follow-up Procedures
Follow-up of suspicious lesions discovered during the screening process is of paramount importance. It has been realized
that screening tests are NOT designed to be diagnostic. Screening is merely a process to identify possible
malignant abnormalities which must be confirmed through proper diagnostic work-up. Therefore, it behooves any screening
program to ensure that patients in whom a suspected lesion has been found are referred to and seen by the appropriate
physician in a timely manner. This process is very time consuming and requires the establishment of a network of health
care providers to whom patients can be referred. All sites of the Partners In Wellness program have
implemented procedures for follow-up consistent with the local situation.
